Villain of the Month - Edition N°15

And so he spoke.....And so he spoke. That lord of Castamere. But now the rains, weep o'er his halls, with no one there to hear. Again, for this edition of the Villain of the Month, we return to the world of Game of Thrones, and this time, to present the Lord of the House Lannister: Lord Tywin Lannister.

In the story of Tywin, and first of its past, it is known that Lord Tywin, when he was still young, was sent to King's Landing to become the squire of the king Aegon V. Later, Tywin fought at the sides of the prince Aerys, and this one, to thank him for his help, made him as knight. It is covered with glory that Tywin returned to Casterly Rock, where he realizes that his father, Tytos Lannister, became a weak man, miserable, and he drags a bad reputation, like the rest of the family. Tywin decides to take matters in hand. Thus he becomes the new lord of Casterly Rock and the governor of the West. In the period where are happening the series and books, Tywin is still lord of his house, and at first everything seems to be fine. But fate falls as soon that Joffrey, who became king after the death of Robert, killed Lord Eddard Stark, triggering the North Rebellion and the War of Five Kings. Forced to defend his land and his family, Tywin goes at war with its bannerets and his troops to fight the army of Robb Stark, the main leader of the rebellion. But seeing that his nephew Joffrey does everything wrong, Tywin, exasperated, sent his son Tyrion to King's Landing, as Hand of the King, to finally make obey Joffrey and bring him back to the reason to become a true king.
For a while Tywin rest with his troops in the ruins of Harrenhal, or he decided that prisoners will not be executed but used for their work skills. He even chose a new butler, unaware that she is Arya Stark, on the run and presumed dead.
Tywin then returns during the attack of King's Landing, or with the help of the Tyrell, he rejects the troops of Stannis Baratheon. His son Tyrion was wounded and failed in his mission, Tywin resumes hand of the king title and himself decides to take matters in hand.
For every month that passes to King's Landing, Tywin took his role of hand as King very seriously. He is even the only, with Tyrion, to dare stand up to the angry outbursts of Joffrey and dare tell him, in person, that a man who always repeats that he is the king does not look to a king. When Joffrey was poisoned to his wedding and that Tyrion is accused of the murder, it's Tywin who chairs the judgment, representing the new king Tommen. During the trial, Tyrion stands up against his father and the rest of the meeting, seeing that even Shae, the woman he loved, betrayed him. For the trial by combat, Cersei Lannister selected Gregor Clegane, and Prince Oberyn Martell chooses himself to defend Tyrion, who actually have an account to settle with Gregor. But, the fight will end in victory for Gregor, seriously injured, but killing Oberyn at the last moment. Tywin then declare officially that Tyrion is sentenced to death. Yet one night, Tyrion, with the help of his brother Jaime, escapes from his cell and had to flee out of the city. But before that, Tyrion introduced himself into the chamber of Tywin, where he discovers Shae, and discovers that she slept with Tywin. Mad with rage and sadness, Tyrion kills Shae by strangling her, then went to the latrine, or he discovers Tywin sat on the latrine. After a brief discussion, Tyrion kills his father, with two crossbow bolts. Thus ended the life of Lord Tywin Lannister, killed by a son he despised since ever.

Tywin's character is so well written that he might have existed for real in the Middle Ages. An implacable Lord, tough, sometimes cruel, but always caring of the reputation of his family. Indeed, if Tywin said he loves his children and his family, for him, it is always the name that matters, because the name of the family remains forever, not the family members. Tywin is also a known warlord, and is even considered as the richest lord of the Seven Kingdoms. Tywin sometimes knows to be lenient with the prisoners, and uses them as laborers for executing the work, for example, give work to a prisoner forgeron, and would make him work in a forge. But Tywin also knows how to be cruel, especially with his enemies with members of his own family, especially toward Tyrion, his dwarf son, that he despises and blames for the death of his wife, Joanna Lannister. As a warlord; Tywin is very smart and prefers to use guile rather than force. So, secretly, during the war of the Five Kings, he secretly formed alliances with allies of Robb Stark, promising them wealth and forgiveness if they join him. Thus, Tywin managed to return the bannerets of Robb against himself, and to win the war without having to fight.
